Do Buy!

An ethnographic film on the city, its disenfranchised workers, utopian architecture, and consumerist heaven of shopping malls.
Starring Toyota Landcruiser, Outspoken Pakistani Security Gaurd and few a more expats.
There are many untold stories of Expats and trevellers in the Gulf, This documentry is just one of them.. I hope this starts a trend of independent movie making in the Gulf and tell the world its story.

Life's Little Instruction Book-worth reading !!!

I dunno if you have got this as a email forward, I was cleaning my inbox and
ended up re-reading it again and recollecting how many thing things I've
done, done right and done wrong.. Really cool book.. Better than many of the
ones holy guys want us to read.

Life's Little Instruction Book

. Have a firm handshake.

. Look people in the eye.

. Sing in the shower.

. Own a great stereo system.

. If in a fight, hit first and hit hard.

. Keep secrets.

. Never give up on anybody. Miracles happen everyday.

. Always accept an outstretched hand.

. Be brave. Even if you're not, pretend to be. No one can tell
the difference.

. Whistle.

. Avoid sarcastic remarks.

. Choose your life's mate carefully. From this one decision will
come 90 per cent of all your happiness or misery.

. Make it a habit to do nice things for people who will never
find out.

. Lend only those books you never care to see again.

. Never deprive someone of hope; it might be all that they have.

. When playing games with children, let them win.

. Give people a second chance, but not a third.

. Be romantic.

. Become the most positive and enthusiastic person you know.

. Loosen up. Relax. Except for rare life-and-death matters,
nothing is as important as it first seems.

. Don't allow the phone to interrupt important moments. It's
there for your convenience, not the caller's.

. Be a good loser.

. Be a good winner.

. Think twice before burdening a friend with a secret.

. When someone hugs you, let them be the first to let go.

. Be modest. A lot was accomplished before you were born.

. Keep it simple.

. Beware of the person who has nothing to lose.

. Don't burn bridges. You'll be surprised how many times you
have to cross the same river.

. Live your life so that your epitaph could read, No Regrets

. Be bold and courageous. When you look back on life, you'll
regret the things you didn't do more than the one's you did.

. Never waste an opportunity to tell someone you love them.

. Remember no one makes it alone. Have a grateful heart and be
quick to acknowledge those who helped you.

. Take charge of your attitude. Don't let someone else choose it
for you.

. Visit friends and relatives when they are in hospital; you
need only stay a few minutes.

. Begin each day with some of your favourite music.

. Once in a while, take the scenic route.

. Send a lot of Valentine cards. Sign them, 'Someone who thinks
you're terrific.'

. Answer the phone with enthusiasm and energy in your voice.

. Keep a note pad and pencil on your bed-side table.
Million-dollar ideas sometimes strike at 3 a.m.

. Show respect for everyone who works for a living, regardless
of how trivial their job.

. Send your loved ones flowers. Think of a reason later.

. Become someone's hero.

. Marry only for love.

. Count your blessings.

. Compliment the meal when you're a guest in someone's home.

. Wave at the children on a school bus.

. Remember that 80 per cent of the success in any job is based
on your ability to deal with people.

. Don't expect life to be fair.

Graham’s 10 Signs of a Bargain Stock

Jk Lasser in the Book "How to pick stocks like Warren Buffet" writes on Benjamin Graham 10 signs of a bargain stock

A company would have to meet seven of the following ten criteria (as laid out
in Security Analysis) before Graham would consider it a cheap stock:

1. An earnings-to-price yield (the opposite of the price-earnings ratio) that
is twice the current yield of an AAA (top-rated) bond. If bonds are yielding
5 percent, the earnings yield of a stock should be 10 percent. In other
words, you could get 5 percent fairly safely; to take on the risk of a stock,
you want twice the possible reward.
2. A p-e ratio that is historically low for that stock. Specifically, it should be
two-fifths of the average p-e ratio the shares had over the past five years.
3. A dividend yield of two-thirds of the AAA bond yield. (Obviously, stocks
that don’t pay dividends wouldn’t qualify under this rule.)
4. A stock price that is two-thirds of the tangible book value per share.
5. A stock price that is two-thirds of the net current asset value or the net
quick-liquidation value.
6. Total debt lower than tangible book value.
7. A current ratio of two or more.
8. Total debt that’s not more than net quick-liquidation value.
9. Earnings that have doubled within the past ten years.
10. Earnings that have declined no more than 5 percent in two of the past ten
years.

The individual investor, Graham counseled, should adapt these rules to his
or her own situation.
• If an investor needs income, he or she should pay special attention to rules
1 through 7—especially, of course, to rule 3, the one requiring high
dividends.
• An investor who wants safety along with growth might pay special attention
to rules 1 through 5, along with 9 and 10.
• An investor emphasizing growth can ignore dividends, but should pay
special attention to rules 9 and 10, underweighting 4, 5, and 6.

Readers : If you need the book do let me know, its a must read for any investor or follower of the markets. .

Dor

ayesha
Just saw Dor on DVD, one of the most colourful and Vibrant movie of the year. Amazing cinematography and contrasting locations, from the Dry Sand dunes of Rajasthan to green lush mountains to Himachal Pradesh.

Dor is the story about 2 different women from different places connected by a common incident in Saudi Arabia. Its about a women's quest and journey to seek pardon for the Husband who faces death penalty for the accidental death of his friend. The only way she can save her husband is if the victims wife signs the MAafinama(Pardon petition) as per Saudi Law.
The movie brings out the best in Ayesha Takia, Gul Panag also does a great job and ye Shreyas Talpade who plays a Bahuroopiya finally speaks and he surely does speak and mimic more than needed.
Like every Nagesh Kuknoor film it has good songs by Salim-Sulaiman.The best songs are Yeh Honsla, Imaan Ka Asar, Kesariya Balam

Worth a Dekko 3.5/5
G1. As usual Nagesh Kuknoor saved money by giving himself a role in the movie.
G2. Ayesha Takia has no hot scene so don't get the DVD if your expecting any hot scenes.
G3. During the shooting of the climax Train scene Ayesha Takia trips and falls while running parallel to the train.
G4. Ayesha considers Nagesh Kuknoor as her Brother :)), Poor Nagesh KLPD.

Don Rocks

Just saw Don at the shady Doha Cinema.
Well made and well shot with total suspense... Must Dekko!!

I would give 4/5.

It was Eid Holiday out here in Doha, The cinema was jam pack like some desi theatre with people fighting and geesing in the lines. It was a rare full house show with people fighting inside the theatre with Cops arresting a few while movie was on.

It was very much worth the effort to see a well made remake.

DNA says Sorry

Hi guys, I just received the mail from Anuradha sengupta, the senior editor from DNA apologizing for the flick.
from my side I shall continue reading DNA and give them my pics whenever needed of course with due credit.

Here's the mail.

Dear Satish,

Hi. I bring out the Sunday city features page. I am really sorry about the incident. It isn't Laiq Qureshi who is at fault. I had taken that photo as a refererral -- and Laiq had been told to get the actual picture from IC Colony church authorities. I had thought if Laiq wasn't able to get the pic by the deadline, I'd use yours with your permisson. If he got the pic, I'd replace the picture on the page.

Laiq did get the photo the next day. It was even scanned. It was to be put on the page, but, ultimately, somehow got overlooked in the deadline chaos. Once again, I am profusely sorry about this. Believe me, it was completely unintentional. I never meant to plagiarise. It has happened to a close friend of mine whose entire portfolio of pix on Ladakh got put on the web by a friend of his under his own name. I'd never ever do that.

Regards

Malayali name formula

It has been a well kept secret for eons, but finally Itty Boben Jacob Elias Kuruvilla from Pazhookaville, near Thelmasherry, Kerala has consented to let us publish this classified Mallu formula, on the naming of Mallu kids.

1. Select a combination of both the mother's and father's names. eg: Suresh and Sharon = Susha, or Joseph and Beena = Jobi.

2. The addition of a 'mon' (meaning son) or 'mol' (meaning daughter) is optional. eg: Sushamol, Jobimon

3. To attach a modern anglicised feel to the names, the mol or mon can be replaced with boy or girl. eg: Jobiboy, Sushagirl.

4. For the politically correct Keralite family, mol and mon can be replaced by the universal 'kutty'(child), which can be used for both boys and girls! eg: Jokutty, Susikutty

Even parents having combination names can still give their children suitable names eg: Libi and Jobi = Lijo However, in the scenario where the parents already have combination names that cannot form more comprehensible child names. eg: Itty and Amukutty, would produce only Itam (which doesn't even sound like a name), or Amit (which is like Northie and stuff!!!!), then:

a. Use an English word like Baby, Merry, Titty, Pearly, Smiley, Anarchy, etc.

b. Use a combination of two English names that you think sound cool (but never cool enough) like Meredith + Gina = Megi, or Sharon + Darlene =Sharlene

c. Use a name from the Bible (and not Nebuchadnezzar! Use one that even Velliammachi can pronounce!) like Jacob, Sam, John, Joseph, Mathew, or Jijo!

d. Use a name that sounds like a cuss word but isn't. eg: Boben, Prussy, Shagi, JustinTimberlake etc.

Note: The use of the letter 'j' is useful in the naming of sibling where names that sound alike are a novelty. eg: Ajji, Sajji, Majji, Bhajji and Nimajji, or Sijo, Lijo, Jijo, Anjo, Panjo, Banjo!

Rediff has gone Crazy

But I still like this contest of theirs, They have the guts and first mover advantage to this.

Where is Osama? SMS us and win prizes

Some of thier likely upcoming contests are

1. Who killed JFK
2. Where is D Company's CEO
3. How is Smita related to the Thackeray's
4. Why is Rekha always with Farzana.

Whatever said Rediff must be surely make some moolah since junta can vote as many times as they want.

I wish the US goverment did a global SMS contest from thier reward booty to help in thier mission to find OBL and Al Qaeda.

    Lonely stories from Bollywood

DNA has this story about the the unsung face of Bollwood The Black Marketer and Projectionist aka Bioscopewala

I remember in theatre in Borivli and Vasai, the projectionist used to rewind and play the songs on public demand and people used to dance in the theatre aisle and seats.... I remember the song very much " Ek do Teen .... and Dhak Dhak ...  Total Chaos, people throwing chiller at the screen every time Madhuri did a Jhatka or Dhak Dhak ...

Also not written are the women Black Marketers in Ajanta, Jaya and Diamond.. These are scary looking Banjara women who openly black, they keep their tickets and monies in their blouse.... Cops can't dare touch them... They give discounts to kids and are often helpful.
Tip buy the ticket just when the movie is about to start .. That's when bees ka chalees become bees ka tees!!

    Kabhie Kabhie I wonder

My bloglines list is around 50 blogs that I read everyday or every other day from people I don't know and those know I know, One striking thing I've noticed that every blogger has something to hide or is hiding something or not sharing something.
I know maybe is coz of fear of something or embarrassment or plain "its my damn blog" kinda thing...
Rarely does anyone write about his/her brother/sister or parents girlfriends/boyfriends or bosses or clients or shit n chaos around him/her ....

Normally One starts a blog offline, to keep ones journals like a private diary then when slowly you have the world logging on to your blog, one kinda changes the look n feel and the blog entries... Then I guess it becomes as if you are blogging for the world, its no longer yours alone....

It kinda becomes like a Karan Johar Movie with all good things you share the good karma by commenting on some blogs you like and the wonderful circle of blogworld revolves around the world of good karma and you think this is cool... lets keep this going, write good things avoid any nasty postings ...

The world of I blog you comment.... you Blog I comment.

Or I guess its like the beautiful voice you hear on FM, you think its a sweet n funny girl who has a wild sense of humour, who loves doing phone pranks on helpless victims and you have the halo and picture of her pasted on you mind, but once you see her real picture in some magazine or TV lot of those characters you had in mind just vanish.....You think aha just a norma RJ

I think a good blog is just like that.......But there is definitely more to it than just the content and the blogger....

As for me personally I do avoid naming people who I kinda get pissed of with or find them shady or have something funny about to blog abt them ... coz I may end up drinking with them and becoming friends again...
And secondly in this world of Google search I cant be doing these kinda vendetta... I might as well use the old fashion way of ignore and avoid........

This weekend I saw Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna....

I kinda liked it but the ending is damn fuckall.... I really hate it when the directors leave the ending to the audience...
Ek tho we pay tru our nose for the tickets and upar se we have to make our own conclusions. Pure Cheating.

For those you have seen the movie Abhishek is the luckiest of all, he gets Saira Mohan :))

Fan chases Abhishek for an umbrella

Fan chases Abhishek for an umbrella : IBNLive.com

This doesn't get anymore filmier than this.....
Chattri tho sirf bahana hai, hummein tho aapko jagana hai :))

I remember when I was in 9th Std I found a box of Building Architecture plans in the train, I went all the way from Borivli to Dadar to return it, Thinking the guy would reward me.

He just said thanks but gave no reward.

The human mind is one fucked up entity on one hand we want to do the good karma but sub-consciously we wish for some profit motive.

After that whenever I have found anything I've asked people to come and collect it.

Things I found Samsung Mobile Phone (which belonged to a chatterbox marketing girl), BMC Id, Cricket Bat.

Things I've lost Bag with books and food, Purse ( credit/debit cards, railway pass, 500 bucks) ... I just got a call from the guy who found it, he never returned the stuff.

    Teacher's Names....

I've joined my school's (St. Francis D'assisi High School)  group on Orkut, Just reading the posts about the teachers antics and code names we had for them is giving great internal laughter. They guys around me are wondering if I've gone pansy.

Am missing my teachers they were so cool and funny  yet strict and caring at times. I was an average student and don't do too much masti as being a mallu most teachers knew my parents and I could be easily caught or even let off with less punishment :))

We had names for them often with love and based on their characteristics and behaviors.

Hear are a few great ones
    Athrophoda
    Bhagla
    Ravan
    Bewda
    Sattu
    Bedook
    Hillary & Bhusan
    Mirinda
Joyamma (she was rumored to have a fake breast), we later realized she had cancer.
    Liliput

There is nuttin like school days and the One Rupee ka VadaPav and 25 p ka Pepsi cola :))

    For those who are ....

... wondering why am not posting so frequently on my blog...

Well there are a few reasons, primarily I've deiced not to post about sad and depressing things around me.

There are tons of not so cool things about this place harsh working conditions for Blue collared workers, Extreme temperature they have to work on,ill-treatment and non payment of their salaries etc etc

80% of the population dreaming and longing to be home but can't do it coz of no other alternative, The freedom and right to do and drink anywhere in our country.

One thing I really like is that during the day someone is a Sales manager or Executive or technician or Foreman or Driver or even CEO but in the evening at the common office accommodation everyone turns into Ramu... Cooking, chopping, washing, cleaning without any qualms or second thought.

Everyone here has the same plan "work, slog, save for 2-3 years.... go back to India, do some business or invest and relax"

Guys who have been in the gulf for long say that "Once one has worked here his body will not be able to adapt to Indian conditions and will try to get back here"

As for me,  I'm confused at the moment and am longing to be in Bombay.

Don, Umrao Jaan and Dhoom 2 Flop!!

Even before movies have been launched, Don, Umrao Jaan and Dhoom 2 have been written off as miserable flops in the Euro RSCG Bollywood Predictameter study. The study goes on to say that Munnabhai Lagey Raho will be a bigger hit than Kabhie Alvida Na Kehna. And last weekend’s, Emraan’s “The Killer” will make more bucks than Naseeruddin Shah’s directorial debut, “Yun Hota To Kya Hota”

    http://www.agencyfaqs.com/news/company_news/Corporate/9307.html

Its a lesser known fact that EuroRsg invested huge amounts of money on a Filmy Dotcom and lost it big time.

I'm wondering if this is so correct then Euro Rsg should make its own movies with "Prosumers"

    Udayananu Tharam

Last week after ages I saw a really funny movie, no its not a Hindi movie its a mallu movie "Udayananu Tharam"
Total kickass hilarious stuff Srinivasan and Mohan Lal ( Lal Ettan for Respect :) )

After a long time I saw a real natural Mallu comedy.

The movie is scripted by the man Srinivasan himself

    Bambai nagariya

    Bambai nagariya

One of the first songs to start playing on the radio after a news update on the bomb blasts on Tuesday was Bambai Nagariya from Taxi No 9211, evoking tired laughter from a motley group travelling by car.
The irony behind Vishal Dadlani's lyrics (below) for the John Abraham-Nana Patekar film was evident:

Living in the city, drive me crazy
Living in the city, never easy
Living in the city, take me up and bring me down and down and down
Laakh laakh roz aake bas jaate hain
Is shaher se dil lagake phas jaate hain
Living in the city, drive me crazy
Living in the city, hey hey
Laakh laakh roz aake bas jaate hain
Is shaher se dil lagake phas jaate hain
Nana: Saala idhar toh footpath bhi houseful hai
John: Yeh Bombay hai, yahaan time ka matlab hai paisa samjhe. Mujhe tees minute ki journey teen minute mein puri karni hai
Nana: Saala khud marna hai toh mar na doosre ki kayko vaat lagata hai...

    Sad indeed.

We should outsource our defenses to Israel or at least some fucking thing from them.

Our Netas and their cronies will come n screw up Bombay even further, I wish we gave the Army the free hand to take care of our defenses, We need to wipe LET, SIMI or whoever is behind this cowardly acts.

Blasts Update : My Uncle was behind the Borivli, he is safe.

KK who was in the Mira Road Train, survived as he was in the second class compartment.

    girish adds

K.K. had a close encounter, he was in the same train which blasted, but in different dubba but he is fine by the grace of god.
He says his MAWA eating habit made him to go by second class from where he can spit out continously as he got a window seat in second class

Bombay blasts in Local Trains - Mahim, Khar & Jogeshwari

The Two Cow System - Gelf Special!!

    DUBAI SYSTEM

You have two cows. You create a website for them and advertise them in all magazines. You create a Cow City or Milk Town for them. You sell off their milk before the cows have even been milked to both legit and shady investors who hope to resale the non-existent milk for a 100% profit in two years time. You bring Tiger Woods to milk the cow first to attract attention.

    QATAR SYSTEM:

You have two cows. They've been sitting there for decades and no one realizes that cows can produce milk. You see what Dubai is going; you go crazy and start milking the heck out of the cows' boobs in the shortest time possible. Then you realize no one wanted the milk in the first place.

    SAUDI SYSTEM:

Since milking the cow involves nipples the gov't decides to ban all cows in public. The only method to milk a cow is to have a cow in on one side of the curtain and the guy milking the cow on the other or to hire females and train to milk the cows ... the debate is still going on.

    BAHRAIN SYSTEM:

You have two cows. Some high gov't official steals one, milks it, sells the milk and pockets the profit. The gov't tells you there is just one cow and not enough milk for the people. The people riot and scream death to the govt and carry Iranian flags. The Parliament, after thinking for 11 month, decide to employ ten Bahrainis to all milk the cow at the same time so cut back on unemployment.

    Oman System:

    Do we really care ?

    Kuwait System:

You have two cows, one is gay the other is a fanatic ! All the cows in the world hate these two cows, and these two cows hate the world.

    LEBANON SYSTEM:

You have two cows. One is owned by Syria and the other is controlled by the gov't.

    Yem ean System:

Both don't funcation since they are drugged up on "gat" 24/7.

    Addition:

Mallus in Gelf System : You have 2 cows one likes Mohanlal and other  Mammooty and both hate Hindi movies.

Found this kickass stuff on  http://beingqatari.blogspot.com/

    The fight for ADSL Connection

We are trying to get an ADSL line from QTel in our villa for the last 3 weeks and we haven't even completed 2% of the task.
First of all I need to get someone who has a Qatari RP, managed to coax my Jordanian friend who lives in our villa to lead on and take the connection in his name.

For some strange reason my company doesn't have the address and details of the villa we are living, I guess its due to the culture of PO Boxes in Qatar.

Things we need to get together for filing the application.
Street name, Street Number, Area Name, Villa Number, Electricity number, Water Connection Number and yes Neighbors Landline Phone number ( I guess its to trace the Exchange number)
    And 300 Riyals.

Since I couldn't find any street sign board , I used
http://www.gisqatar.org.qa/exploreEn/ and got the street name & number, Also our villa has no name or number, just something written vaguely in arabic, I guess its some holy saying or something.

    Electricity number also done.

Hopefully in a day or two we shall manage to get the rest and submit the docs.
When will we go online, good question.... only time will tell.

We intend to use wireless routers or create a LAN and do the desi thing of sharing it between 4 guys :))

In Bombay the local cable operator who provides intenet can go live max in 2-3 days and never worries much about collecting payments, I guess this is what competition and opening of the economy can do for you.
