This stupid assert...The comparison is uncalled for. This stupid assertion was published in Mumbai Mirror as a mail today.

Inches of rain: Doesn't matter. It wasn't rain which was the problem in New Orleans. It was a hurricane which even broke bridges, brought forth a 20 feet wall of water, drowned people who had taken shelter in attics. Entire localities were blown away in the hurricane.

Deaths in Mew Orleans within 48 hours of Katrina...100
Deaths in Mumbai within 48hours of rain.. 37.

Stupid comparison. A comparison between rain and a hurricane which came with rain and blew sea water in?!

Number of people to be evacuated in New Orleans... entire
city..wohh
Number of people evacuated in Mumbai...10,000

Of course. That is becase the entire city lies below sea level, and once water gets in, it can't go out. If you watch TV, you can see that the entire city is filled with water. Once there is stagnant water, it is obvious that diseases are just a few days away.

Cases of shooting and violence in New Orleans...Countless
Cases of shooting and violence in Mumbai.. NONE

Not countless, we don't know the numbers yet. It was definitely high. In Mumbai - none. Why? Because people knew that the water would escape, they coud reach homes, it will be a normal day soon. New Orleans had an acute food an water shortage for several days, full communications systems breakdown, and lots of dead people, and people dropping dead due to exhaustion. When life looks hopeless, lawlessnes follows. Did it look hopeless in Mumbai?

I am going to step into this and say that if a Hurricane Katrina hits Mumbai, we are all DEAD. Dead, as dead fish in dirty water. NOLA faced something which is prety similar in impact to a Tsunami - we faced water and flooding which drained away by itself. If you feel like comparing, compare India's Tsunami-hit areas to New Orleans. This city, Mumbai, is barely standing on its feet on a good day - pray we never have to see a Tsunami, an earthquake, a hurricane. US had its boats and helicopters and plans and hovercrafts - even though they were moved away during the huricane - which is why it toook time to bring them back to help - not to mention official cluelessness too. I doubt the entire Indian navy has many helicopters as the ones which are helping in evacuation now.

Don't tempt fate.

This is not meant for the author of this blog - he just reproduced something. The gloating about how great Mumbai is becoming unbreabale with every passing day. Did any newspaper mention the molestations and robberies that took place during our single night of rain? Yes. HT did. Others prefered to play up the Mumbai spirit.

Want to see mumbai spirit again? Visit any of the beaches on ganesh Visarjan. The number of girls and women who get groped on that day is just shocking. You can find that news itme in a corner of newspapers and not at all on TV. Religious occasion use for groping? have a calamity, and then watch the rapes!

B Mathew
Editor
www.dancewithshadows.coma correspondenthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09123886668779883114noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9045616.post-1126078987284351362005-09-07T13:13:00.000+05:302005-09-07T13:13:00.000+05:30vincent : We are all the same when it comes to nat...vincent : We are all the same when it comes to nature's fury... new orlean or Bombay or Indonesia or Sri Lanka.

anonymous : Bombay had 40 times more population than NOLA and had enough early warning... its survived and rocked on...

suhag : how come ur Firangi ??? :S

rluxemburg : USA has one poitn agenda.. lets preach the world and forget whats happening in our backyard.

You just cant solve the world problems before setting your own house in order.

The best part was Bangladesh donating 1 million USD for the victims in New Orleans :))Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11102416268932336745noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9045616.post-1126078597346548492005-09-07T13:06:00.000+05:302005-09-07T13:06:00.000+05:30preity: same here :))preity: same here :))Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9045616.post-1126055008246494852005-09-07T06:33:00.000+05:302005-09-07T06:33:00.000+05:30I think the point is that, even Americans are diss...I think the point is that, even Americans are dissappointed about the response time of the various agencies involved, as well as the beaurocracy/red tape. From what I hear, a mobile hospital could only be situated in Missisipi instead of Louisiana simply because of that.

Then again there was the shooting at aid agencies and the police that made lotsa people gawk in disbelief...... Thank God it looks like the unrest (not the water) seems like its over now.Kurios1978https://www.blogger.com/profile/00215196207968693005noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9045616.post-1126023751093355102005-09-06T21:52:00.000+05:302005-09-06T21:52:00.000+05:30As another poster pointed out, there is a differen...As another poster pointed out, there is a difference between the New Orleans and Mumbai floods. In Mumbai, the water had a natural path in and out. The water in New Orleans is stuck there until the city's protective levees are rebuilt and even then it must be forced out by pumps.

Still, it's really pathetic that the USA did not respond better to the tragedy. There are a lot of reasons why that is true, too many for a blog comment to list.Rachel Luxemburghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12521247639838493705noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9045616.post-1126000457141972762005-09-06T15:24:00.000+05:302005-09-06T15:24:00.000+05:30No except that Mumbai is not below sea level and w...No except that Mumbai is not below sea level and was not hit by a Category 4 hurricane before it was flooded.

Still I'd pick the people of Bombay over the people of NOLA any day.
