Mornings Showers in Doha

Today morning the rains caught by surprise, I had to wait for a cab in the rain. The rain has created a white coloured white cement type slush allover the dirt road area...thanks to the desert lime sand.
Took these pics while waiting for the cab.

The Filipino cab driver who was working earliar in Saudi Arabia, told me that unlike Saudi who came out in the open and danced when it rained the Qataris preferred to stay indoors.

7. There will always be hajjar drunk Sallu's on the mean roads of Bombay
and the story continues.....

Peter Hitchens on renaming of Bombay.

Last week Peter Hitchens from the Daily Mail, London had written to me in connection to a story he was doing on BBC's decision to rename Bombay to Mumbai and the renaming of the cities worldwide . He asked me whether Bombay was still called Bombay or is it Mumbai.
We exchanged a few mails on the confusion.
The final result - His article in my Mail on Sunday column on Sunday.
www.dailymail.co.uk/.../columnists.html?in_ article_id=381070&in_page_id=1772&in_author_id=224

The Daily mail is a paid site so here's Peter's Article

IRRITATED by the way most of the media have taken to referring to Bombay as

'Mumbai' during the recent Test match, I did some research.

Supporters of this move are mostly making fools of themselves. The politically correct might like to know that many people in Bombay refuse to

use the new name. The local High Court and stock exchange still bear the name 'Bombay'.

And the move to get rid of the 400-year-old (Portuguese) name came from Hindu nationalists, whom the BBC would certainly describe as 'Rightwing' if it knew anything about them, which I suspect it doesn't.

We could avoid all this if we just called famous cities and countries by the names we have used for years. Since I don't call Prague 'Praha', Warsaw Warszawa' or Paris 'Paree', I don't see why I should have to call Peking 'Beijing'.

In a way it's a compliment to them that we have an English name for them. I don't object if Italians call London 'Londra'. The BBC doesn't call Burma 'Myanmar', or Rangoon 'Yangon'. Nor does it call Dublin 'Baile Atha Cliath', its official name since 1922.

By the way, if 'Bombay' is 'Mumbai' then oughtn't they to call India 'Bharata'? And did you know that Croatia is really Hrvatska?

Munich

Munich, originally uploaded by mzsatish.

Tagline: The world was watching in 1972 as 11 Israeli athletes were murdered at the Munich Olympics. This is the story of what happened next.

Plot Outline: Based on the true story of the Black September aftermath, about the five men chosen to eliminate the ones responsible for that fateful day.

Depth and detail - Unbiased effort by Steven Speilberg with no sides taken.

Awesome movies on dark insights of the Intelligence Agencies, Spy Networks & Terrorists Organisations and the way they conduct business.

After watching the movie I wonder if it would be a good idea if USA outsources the OBL search to Mossad.

I watched the censored version in Doha, the full version is said to be more graphic.

I would give 4/5 to this Oscar Nominated movie by the genius Speilberg.

Abu Amaar Yasser Arafat once said "One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter"

Hummus, Mutabal & Khubbus

Hummus - Mutabal

Readymade Hummus & Mutabal

Khubbus
Khubbus

Hummus is a dip made of chickpea paste with various additions, such as olive oil, fresh garlic, lemon juice, paprika, and tahini (sesame seed paste) eaten with Khubbus (Arabic Roti)

This is a very common Arabic dish and very filling and cheap too.

When I run out of options to eat, this is one of my favorites.

The Tiger!!

Doha Cinema ticket, originally uploaded by mzsatish.

I saw a mallu movie in theatre after more than 16 years. Boredom makes you explore the unexplored.
The Tiger is a mallu masala movie full of action and general stunts.. played by Suresh Gopi ( ala Sunny Deol of the south)
The whole movie revolves around his heroics he bashes up goondas at will, says non stop dialogs, pulls up stunts at will in slow motion, shows his clicched fist to the baddes 'up urs jaisa'.
There are no songs.

http://www.indiaglitz.com/channels/malayalam/preview/7953.html

Only In Kerala can an overweight 100 kg plus actor play a hero and get box office hits.

Somethings that unite mallus world over are Smokes, Booze, Politics, Mammotty & Mohanlal.

And yes we are Filmy!!

You may wonder what is Corniche
The word corniche is typically used to describe a road on the side of a cliff or mountain, with the ground rising on one side of the road and falling away on the other. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corniche

Qatar is on a reverse countdown, it is hosting the Asian Games in December, hence the frenzy constructions all around. Over 200,000 people are expected for the Games.

Random thoughts

  • I never understood why Desi Expats remit over 75% of their income back home and then crib about living conditions, income  and lifestyles in Qatar.
  • There are no stray dogs in Qatar but millions of stray cats.
  • What if a few thousands Bombay Taxis are allowed to ply on Gelf roads.
  • Himesh Reshaamiya is a sour puss.
  • I need to watch Syriana.
  • How come I had a dream that I was working for Kingdom Holding with Al Waleed bin Talal.
  • Why isn't someone starting a Jumbo Vada Pav franchise here.
  • The Nissan Sunny Pick-up should be the conferred the mascot vehicle of Malabaris.
  • I wonder what Advani does on a Rut Yatra.

There are also Annas & Thambislike him who sell filter coffee and Nescafe and cigarettes during the night.

Most of these guys at times do multiple jobs like
a) Delivering Milk
b) Idli Dosa Vada Stall
c) Singhdana stall (usually run by the thambi in Half chadi)
d) Late Night Chai Coffee wala.

Dharavi means quick sand in English, its Asia's largest slum and now is one of the costliest area in Bombay thanks to the flourishing multicrore leather industry.

People still talk about Vardarajan Mudliar (Vardabhai) erstwhile the robinhood of Dharavi and his mammoth Ganpati Pandal.

My Dad in late 60's had spent sometime in Dharavi when he landed in Bombay .

Rang De Carnival- IC Colony

http://ww1.mid-day.com/metro/malad/2006/march/132030.htm

IC Colony is the only place in place in Bombay which it think has Carnival.
I remember dressing up in weird costumes and fancy dress outfits and drinking to my fill at the Carnival.

It Earliar used to be held in the Recreation Ground, 206 Last Bus stop then moved to the School Ground.

I hope parties like Bajrang Dal be KhalliValli and make peace and enjoy with everyone.
Ironically the Bajrang Dal guy who stopped the New Year Ball event is an Ex student of St Francis D'Assisi.

Bombay needs more events, parties and happiness.

More about the carnival
The carnival, which is chiefly a Catholic affair, is celebrated at the end of Feb. It’s said that generations ago, in Goa, King Momo and Queen Mimi urged their Catholic subjects to celebrate during this time since March is a time of fasting for Catholics.

Poona rocks!

After Bombay the only place I think I can live is Poona.
The reasons well there are many but primarily the night life...
check out why
http://ww1.mid-day.com/news/city/2006/march/132254.htm

Point to be noted milaard!! - 19 pubs and discotheques, of which six are open well beyond Mumbai’s absurd deadline.

Happening places
- Pallazzio, Fatima Nagar
- Ten Downing Street (TDS), Dhole Patil Road
- Fire and Ice, Kalyani Nagar
- Lush, Dhole Patil Road
- Soho, Kalyani Nagar Road
- Olas, Koregoan Park
- Leather Lounge, Camp area
- Nirvana, INOX, near Wadia College
- Caviar, Market Yard
- Go bananas, NIBM Road
- Zinx, near Wadia College
- Spinx, Koregoan Park

I wouldn't be suprised if soon Poona resembles Bahrain flooded and invaded by Saudis on weekends :)

Why the Brisbane-Gold Coast train still earns its nickname the Bombay Express.

Read this

Though I don't like this linkage but it surely speaks volumes of what the rest of the world thinks about India and its Trains.

Bombay v/s Banglore

Though I dont agree with much of this mail but it has many point worth pondering, definitlely created with a Banglore bias.
I find Bangalore really shady too much hyphe.. like they say in Bombay "Cho##na kam chillana zyada" :))

1.Mumbai has the impeccable record of highest growth of corruption within a span of 30 years.
2. Mumbai has highest number of illegal bootleggers in Asia, protected by police.
3. Mumbai has highest number of tobacco chewers and spitters in India.
4. Mumbai has the lowest number of any particular companies in India -they are all gradually and slowly moving out of the city and the state because of corruption.
5. Mumbai has many private colleges, run by politicians to make fortune (not teaching), by asking lakhs of rupees from poor and middle class students for admission.
6. Mumbai is the only city in the world to have both domestic and international airports having the same name. Even the Central Railway terminus also bears the same name.
7. Mumbai has highest number of inefficient and corrupt public sectors and government organizations in India.
8. Mumbai University has dubious reputation of corrupt practices in teaching, administration and examination. A few of the vice chancellors were caught in the past for such practices.
9. Mumbai has only 40% of local population(i.e.Marathis). Hence a true cosmopolitan with balance 60% consisting of Gujaratis, Taminlians, Kannadigas, Malayalees, Punjabis, Sindhis, Parsis, Bengalis, UPites, Biharis and hailing from other states including foreigners.
10. Mumbai police has the reputation of being the best in the world money can buy.
11. Mumbai has the highest density of non-moving traffic in india. It takes one hour to reach your destination which you can cover by walking in 10 minutes.
12. Mumbai has the highest number of 2-leggers in the world who prefer walking.
13. Mumbai is considered the so-called fashion capital (labelled by page 3 creatures) of east comparable to Paris.
15. Mumbai sportsmen believe that they are best in the world.
16. Mumbai has produced the maximum number of politicians for their fence-sitting attitude.
17. Mumbai has produced the highest number of professionals who indulge in non-professional activities.
18. Mumbai is famous for THREE: Underworld, extortionists and corrupt politicians.
This one is Ultimate.
19. Mumbai is famous for its extortionists and robbers, almost scores of citizens are looted everyday somewhere in Mumbai. Hardly 10% of the cases are reported. So, Mumbai is not only the financial capital of India but also the Corruption capital of the world.
=======================================================================================================
1.Bangalore has the impeccable record of highest growth within a span of 20 years
2. Bangalore has highest number of pubs in Asia .
